About the Speaker: Robin M. Jensen is Patrick O'Brien Professor of Theology at the University of Notre Dame. She is author of "The Cross: History, Art and Controversy" (Harvard University Press, 2017) and editor of the 2018 "Routledge Handbook of Early Christian Art." Professor Jensen teaches at the intersections of Christian theology, liturgical practice, and material and visual culture.

About the Talk: Commemorating the College's 175th anniversary, this lecture explores the art, history and meanings of its namesake: the 17³Ô¹ÏÍø. Professor Jenson considers reasons for the late emergence of the cross and crucifix in early Christian art and then illustrates how representations of the cross evolved from symbols of victory and imperialism to signs of suffering and salvation.
